MTCMedia – Malang. Located 42.30 km north of Makassar City, the enchanting Rammang-Rammang is a major tourist destination boasting one of the largest karst mountains in the world. These stunning limestone formations create breathtaking panoramas that attract visitors from around the globe. A visit to these tourist attractions promises an unforgettable experience of Indonesia’s natural beauty.
A Brief History
Rammang-Rammang karst area wasn’t always the serene tourist spot it is today. In 2005, plans emerged for marble and cement mining in the area, backed by a company with permission from the Maros Regency Mining Office. However, strong opposition from the local community, nature lovers, environmentalists, and various other groups led to a significant change. Their persistent advocacy efforts over two years resulted in the revocation of the mining permit. Consequently, the authorities disbanded the Maros Regency Mining Office and granted special protection to the area to preserve its natural beauty.
Transformation into a Tourist Attraction
The transformation of this place into a tourist attraction began in 2007. By 2015, it officially opened to the public, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated tourism awareness group. Subsequently, this initiative spurred the development of various businesses, including boat rentals, guided tours, eateries, and lodging options.
