MTC MEDIA – Malang. Singosari Temple is one of the ancient blueprint in Indonesia, especially in East Java. Singosari Temple is located in Candirenggo Village, Singosari District, Malang Regency, this temple is a silent witness to the glory of the Singhasari Kingdom, so singosari temple has a high historical value.
A Glimpse of Singosari Temple History

According to Gadjah Mada’s inscription, andesite stone is the main material for making this temple. This temple honors King Kertanegara, who was the father-in-law of the founder of the Majapahit Kingdom. The temple’s architecture is unique compared to other temples because it includes a niche at the foot of the temple for a sculpture of Shiva’s family, while the body and roof of the temple remain empty space.

Past carvers left ornate motifs on the upper part of the structure unfinished, while the lower part remains in its basic form without decorative motifs. The temple grounds of Candi Singosari contain a collection of statues originating from surrounding temple complexes.
This tower-style temple was first reported by Nicolaus H.L. Leydie Melville and J. Kneebel in their book titled “Bescrijving van Tjandi Singosari, en DeWolkentooneneelen van Panataran” published in 1909. The Dutch East Indies government conducted restoration work on the temple in the 1930s, specifically from 1934 to 1937 under the Oudheidkunjdige Dienst (Archaeological Service). The Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia designated Candi Singosari as a National Cultural Heritage site under Decree No. 205/M/2015.

Singosari Temple is located about 10 kilometres from Malang city centre. Visitors can easily reach this location using private vehicles or public transport.
