Local Legends of Bawean Island
The Dutch acquired Bawean Island in 1743 during their colonial rule over Indonesia. Locally, it is known as “Pulau Putri” due to its unique demographic. According to legend, a family from the Kingdom of Champa once visited Bawean. The king’s daughter fell ill during their journey and died on the island. The locals named the island Putri Island in her honor. Her tomb, known as the Jujuk Campa tomb, still exists in Kumalasa village and holds cultural significance.

This island is divided into two sub-districts such as: Sangkapura district and Tambak district. With a population of around 107,000, the island is home to diverse ethnic groups, including Javanese, Madurese, and people from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra.
