“Actually, before the name Coban Pelangi came up, people here used to collect firewood around here (waterfall area). And the waterfall was was a rainbow every day, because there used to be an overhanging rock above (the waterfall) blocking the water. So, the water breaks and creates a rainbow every day,” said Coban Pelangi’s manager and cleaner, Siaman.
“Then there was a flood, I don’t know how many years ago, the overhanging stone was dragged down. So now it’s just a splash of water reflecting the rainbow light,” he said.
In 1984, Coban Pelangi was already well-known among residents of East Malang and was frequently visited by high school students. “It has been well-known among high school students since 1984.” “Then more and more people came here and became famous,” he said.
Moreover, villagers who realized the tourism potential there, started to develop a waterfall tourist attraction called Coban Pelangi. “Then this was initiated by the village in 1986, then because this was Perhutani land, it was taken over by Perhutani in 1989,” said the man who has been the manager of Coban Pelangi for 20 years.
Now, to explore and experience Coban Pelangi, you only need to prepare Rp 12,000 for the entrance ticket and Rp 5,000 for motorcycle parking.
